My students love 'My Favorite Mistake.' After reviewing an assignment, I choose an error in a student's work to anonymously share with the class. We work together to fix one target skill. We celebrate the strengths, which build confidence, and by sharing it anonymously, it helps prevent fear of failure!

Play the Sentence Transformation Game

One of my favorite things about teaching ESL/ENL is that I can be highly creative in my approaches to teaching difficult grammatical concepts. I'm a major fan of gamification, so I have my students manipulate sentence structure through play.

The Sentence Transformation game begins with a base sentence. Students are then invited to transform the sentences while maintaining the original meaning. Examples include changing the sentence from direct to indirect speech, changing the sentence from active voice to passive voice, and changing the sentence from present tense to past tense, or vice versa. They could also make the sentence interrogative, negative, or interrogative-negative, depending on the lesson.

By incorporating peer editing and evaluation, the activity expands to encourage collaborative learning.
