Bilingualism Deepens Cultural Connections While Traveling

Being bilingual has completely changed the way I travel. Speaking Indonesian and English allows me to connect more deeply with locals while also navigating global spaces with ease. For example, in Indonesia, I can move beyond tourist areas and have genuine conversations with fishermen, farmers, or market sellers, while English lets me connect with fellow travelers or access international services. The contrast is striking when I travel with monolingual friends—they often depend on apps or guides, while I can naturally build relationships and discover hidden experiences. Beyond convenience, bilingualism gives me a sense of belonging in more than one culture, which makes each journey feel richer and more personal. It's not just about understanding words but about gaining access to stories, humor, and perspectives that would otherwise be closed off.

Language Skills Enhance Global Travel Experiences

Being bilingual (or multilingual) unlocks a distinct experience and connection while travelling which is difficult to achieve otherwise, as languages are inherently part of the local culture.

As someone born and raised in Portugal, my understanding of the language and the history where my country has interacted with other countries either via trade or as colonies allows me to connect with locals with a shared understanding of our similarities and differences. I am able to understand references and inner humor (even in a second language), which would require explaining to travelers from countries that do not share the same understanding of the language as part of the country's wider cultural interactions.

This can also be extended to languages that share the same origins. Using Portugal as an example, it is easy to communicate with locals from other southern European countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Greece, etc., even if the main language being used for communication is English and not the local languages themselves. The fact that our native languages are of Latin origin means that we approach communication in a similar way and have a better understanding of each other's cultures.

On the contrary, when traveling in countries where English is the only language being used, there is a lack of local cultural understanding that makes it difficult to get a deeper understanding of local customs and social norms.

Spanish Fluency Transforms Tourist into Local

Speaking Spanish turned me from a tourist into a local. With just English, I stuck to the guidebook path. But now I can chat with market vendors, taxi drivers, and cafe owners. The trip becomes about people, not just places. Language opens doors that no tour ever could—and those moments are what make travel unforgettable.
