For as long as translation has existed, it has relied on tools. The recent emergence of AI-driven translation quality assurance (QA) systems should therefore not be understood as a radical break from past practice, but as the latest step in a long tradition of tool-mediated linguistic labour.

Yet public discourse around AI often frames these systems as autonomous decision-makers—capable of replacing human judgement rather than supporting it. From a linguistic perspective, this framing is misleading. Translation review remains, at its core, a human interpretive task. AI systems can assist, accelerate, and structure the review process, but they do not—and cannot—assume linguistic authority.

Translation Review as a Linguistic Activity

Translation review is frequently described as a technical step at the end of a production pipeline, but linguistically it is a complex evaluative process. Reviewers assess far more than grammatical correctness. They must consider adequacy (whether meaning has been preserved), terminological consistency, register, genre conventions, and pragmatic appropriateness within a target culture.

Many of these dimensions resist formalisation. While grammar can often be described in rule-like terms, meaning is context-dependent, and pragmatic acceptability varies according to audience, purpose, and domain. A grammatically impeccable sentence may nevertheless be communicatively inappropriate. Conversely, a deviation from standard grammar may be deliberate, functional, or even necessary.

This distinction—well established in translation studies between form and function—is essential when evaluating the role AI can play in review workflows.

What AI Systems Are Good At

AI-driven translation QA systems excel precisely where language is most formalised. They are effective at detecting orthographic errors, missing segments, duplicated text, spacing inconsistencies, and mismatches against approved terminology. These tasks rely on pattern recognition and comparison rather than interpretation.

From a linguistic standpoint, this aligns with a focus on surface structure rather than deep meaning. AI does not “understand” a text in the human sense; it identifies statistically salient deviations from expected forms. This makes such systems particularly valuable as pre-review filters, catching formal issues at scale and allowing human reviewers to allocate their attention more efficiently.

Importantly, this functionality does not threaten linguistic expertise—it amplifies it. By removing low-level distractions, AI tools can free reviewers to focus on higher-order questions of meaning and communicative intent.

AI as a Pre-Review Filter, Not an Arbiter

The most productive way to conceptualise human–AI interaction in translation review is therefore collaborative rather than competitive. AI excels at consistency, scale, and formal pattern detection. Humans excel at interpretation, contextual reasoning, and communicative judgment.

Rather than asking whether AI can “replace” translators or reviewers, a more linguistically grounded question is how analytical labour is distributed. When designed and used appropriately, AI systems take on tasks that are formal, repetitive, and time-consuming, while humans retain responsibility for meaning, style, and purpose.

This division of labour mirrors long-standing practices in linguistics itself, where quantitative tools support—but do not replace—theoretical analysis.

From a linguistic perspective, the rise of AI-assisted translation review does not signal the erosion of human expertise. It reflects a reconfiguration of roles within an evolving communicative ecosystem. AI tools can surface patterns, enforce consistency, and improve efficiency, but they do not interpret meaning or assume responsibility for linguistic choices.

Translation quality ultimately emerges from collaboration: between source and target languages, between norms and contexts, and increasingly, between humans and machines. Understanding that collaboration through a linguistic lens—rather than a technological one—allows for a more accurate and less alarmist assessment of AI’s role in translation today.
